How They Work
A prosthetic fixture (usually made of titanium) is placed into the bone beneath the gum tissue. The implant serves as a “virtual root” onto which a tooth or teeth are affixed. After placement, the implant site is allowed to heal for four to six months. Placement of the implant requires the use of a local anesthetic and healing is usually quick with minimal discomfort. This part of the procedure is performed in our office by a dental implant specialist near you – usually a periodontist who is a specialist in gum and bone surgery, and then Dr. Kay, Dr. Yaffe, Dr. Berson, or Dr. Deakins add their cosmetic expertise for wonderful results. Although implants take longer to place and can be more costly than other options, they can provide permanent restoration and a very natural appearance, earning their reputation as a state-of-the-art option for tooth replacement.
